Luz Leskowitz

Luz was born in Salzburg to musician parents and started to play the violin at the age of six. Already at the age of thirteen he was admitted to the Musikakademie in Vienna, where he studied with Vasa Prihoda and later with Riccardo Odnoposoff. Parallely, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he studied with Ernst Wallfisch viola and violin. At the same time he attended the Gymnasium in Salzburg.

After his graduation he was invited by Maestro Yehudi Menuhin to teach at the Menuhin school in London and had the privilege to work closely with the Maestro who had an immense influence on his musical development.

With 20, Luz Leskowitz gave his debut concerts in London, Elizabeth Hall and Wigmor Hall, New York, Carnegie Hall, Wien, Musikverein, Hamburg, Musikhalle and Milano Sala Verdi with great success, and was then performing all over Europe, the far and the Middle East, Africa, the USA, Russia, South America and Japan.

Inspired by the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad Luz Leskowitz founded his first Chamber Music Festival in Germany, the Harzburger Musiktage in 1970. Motivated by the enormous success of his festival, he then founded seven other International Chamber Music Festivals in Austria and all over Germany.

In 1979 he formed his own ensemble, the Salzburger Solisten. Since its formation the ensemble performes regularly all over the world.

Luz Leskowitz’s chamber music partners in the past and in the present include: Paul Badura-Skoda, Wilhelm Kempff, Ingrid Haebler, Jörg Demus, Jeremy Menuhin, Igor Oistrach, Norbert Brainin, David Geringas, Heinrich Schiff, Mstislav Rostropovitsch, Hermann Baumann, Karl Leister, Michala Petri, Sharon Bezaly, Hakan Hardenberger, Elly Ameling, Bartok-Quartet, Lark-Quartet, Voces-Quartet. (With the Quartets Chausson’s Concerto for violin, piano and stringquartet, and 2nd viola in stringquintets)

He recorded for numerous lables: CETRA, SYRINX, MIRABELL, ARTE NOVA, DEMUSICA/SONY, EMI-CLASSICS and BIS, repertoire ranging from the baroque to 20th century music.

Luz Leskowitz plays on the Ex-Prihoda – Stradivarius violin from 1707.

Since 1991 Luz Leskowitz is the owner, executive and artistic director of the Salzburger Schlosskonzerte with 360 concerts a year, this is the largest concert series in the world.
